BELIZE

My 'other life' is in Belize (formerly British Honduras) in Central America, where I am building a small hotel and research centre in the south of the country at Maya Beach, near Placencia. I am there once (and sometimes twice) a year, for between six and 12 weeks. In addition to the construction work I also collect moths out there and am working on producing a colour guide to the larger moths of Belize. My long-term aim is to move to Belize permanently to establish and promote the non-profit-making Caribbean Entomological Research as a conduit for funding for the production of identification guides to the insects of the region.

I have extensive links with the region, having lived previously in Jamaica and visited all of the islands of the Eastern Caribbean (some of them many times) to collect and research moths.

Most of the world's insects are in the tropics, whereas most of the world's entomologists live in the temperate zone. Just about everything I earn from tutoring goes toward helping to redress the balance!
