DISTRIBUTION: Central and South America.
TYPE LOCALITY: Belize (ssp. plumbea); Perus (ssp. excelsior Rothschild).
BELIZE RECORDS: Greenhills; Augustine.
METHOD OF IDENTIFICATION: adult illustrated in colour by Hampson (1901) pl. 36, fig. 2 and by Seitz (1925) plate 43, fig. e3. .
NOTES: there does not seem to be any real doubt about the identity of this distinctive species.
