Notarctia proxima
DISTRIBUTION: southern USA; Central America.
TYPE LOCALITY: Mexico.
BELIZE RECORDS: Greenhills.
METHOD OF IDENTIFICATION: adult illustrated by Seitz (1925) pl. 39, fig. b2, and
described by Hampson (1901) p. 404. .
NOTES: this - like Pygarctia roseicapitis - is another species which I only ever
took at Greenhills in 1997 and have never seen again in Belize. The two species have
a similar
distribution. As N. proxima is such a distinctive species
and its Type Locality is Mexico the identification of my specimens appears likely to be
correct.
