DISTRIBUTION: Mexico to southern Brazil.
TYPE LOCALITY: Brazil.
BELIZE RECORDS: Pook’s Hill.
METHOD OF IDENTIFICATION: illustrated in colour by d’Abrera (1986) p. 109.
NOTES: the closely-related and very similar species P. caliginosa may also be found In Belize, as its range is given as including Mexico by d’Abrera (1986). P. caliginosa has forewing apices which come to a single, sharp point whereas P. subhamata has a double-scalloped forewing apex.
