Rothschildia erycina ssp. mexicana

DISTRIBUTION: C. & S. America; Greater and some Lesser Antilles in a variety of forms.
TYPE LOCALITY: (species) French Guyana; (subspecies) various.
BELIZE RECORDS: Las Cuevas.
METHOD OF IDENTIFICATION: 'Rothschildia splendidus' is illustrated by Seitz (1925) on pl. 103, fig. b1. splendidus is given as a synonym of erycina by Heppner (1996), with the subspecies mexicana listed from Mexico.
NOTES: This species is not recorded from Belize by Meerman (1999), who only lists Rothschildia roxana and Rothschildia lebeau yucatana from Belize. This identification has kindly been confirmed by Peter Hubbel, who states that this is indeed subspecies mexicana.
