Composia fidelissima

DISTRIBUTION: southern USA; Central and South America to Uruguay; Cuba; Bahamas; Cayman is. (the record from Jamaica is in error).
TYPE LOCALITY: Cuba.
BELIZE RECORDS: specimens taken near Belmopan in the 1970's are currently in the collection of Barry Fox, who kindly supplied this scan of an unset specimen .
METHOD OF IDENTIFICATION: adult illustrated in colour by Watson & Goodger (1986) fig. 25.
NOTES: I initially misidentified this as the related species C. credula Fab. which occurs in the Greater Antilles and in the neotropics south to Brazil. C. credula is more extensively white speckled on the forewing; has a white-speckled hindwing and has a series of dorso-lateral white spots on the abdomen which are lacking in fidelissima.
