Sphacelodes vulneraria
DISTRIBUTION: S. & C. America; Antilles; southern USA.
TYPE LOCALITY: Brazil.
BELIZE RECORDS: Pook’s Hill; Greenhills; La Milpa.
METHOD OF IDENTIFICATION: kindly identified by Claude Herbulot from my photograph.
NOTES: specimens of this species which I have from the Eastern Caribbean
identified by Claude Herbulot as ‘Sphacelodes fusilineata brunneata’ are
very much less well marked than my Belize specimens of what is alleged
to be their synonym, S. vulneraria. The very dark chocolate brown ground
colour in both sexes of my Belize specimens is replaced by a pale rufous
in Eastern Caribbean specimens, and the marking on the male forewing costa
(which is a greyish colour in Eastern Caribbean specimens) is a vivid
pinky-orange in my Belize specimens. This species is sexually
dimorphic, as illustrated.
