Mapeta xanthomelas
DISTRIBUTION: South and Central America; Antilles.
TYPE LOCALITY: Venezuela.
BELIZE RECORDS: Augustine.
METHOD OF IDENTIFICATION: illustrated in colour on the endpiece
plate of Heppner (1995).
NOTES: a very characteristic species unlikely to be confused
for anything else in this family - although several species in other families
(eg Napata walkeri in the
Arctiidae/Ctenuchinae)
are involved in a mimicry ring involving this general colour pattern.
