8. Lasiocampidae

| BACK TO LIST OF MOTH FAMILIES |

The Lasiocampidae are a quite small family of some 2,200 species reaching their greatest development in the tropics of the Old World. New World species in this family tend to be quite uniform in overall wing shape, with characteristic broad, rounded wings and hairy bodies. Coloration is generally subdued browns and greys, with a few species being off-white or buff in wing coloration, with black spots as markings. The larvae are extremely hairy, flattened and often gregarious and several are important pests of agriculture and forestry.

I have only collected seven species of this family in Belize, and have only identified three of them provisionally to genus so far, as listed below - please click on any underlined species names to go to a colour illustration of the adult (and sometimes its genitalia) and brief information on the species.
