Distribution: southern USA to Chile; Antilles.
Type locality: 'America'
Synonyms: Sphinx hasdrubal Cramer 1780; Pseudosphinx obscura Butler 1877.
E. Caribbean records: St. Martin; St. Lucia; Guadeloupe; Martinique; St. Bart's; Barbados; St. Vincent.
Grenadines records: Union (Daudin, Dec. 1982); Bequia, Union, Canouan, Mustique, Battowia, Palm (E.U. Exp.).
Method of identification: illustrated in colour by d'Abrera (1986) p. 95 and by Hodges (1971) plate 9 fig. 2.
Notes: there is some sexual dimorphism, as illustrated. The larva is the yellow, red and black ‘Frangipani Worm’.
