Semaeopus caecaria




Distribution: South America; Greater and Lesser Antilles.
Type locality: unknown.
Synonyms: Heterephyra distinctacta Warren 1900; Ephyra fartaria Guenee 1858; Heterephyra grisea Warren 1906; Zonosoma occipitaria Herrich-Schaeffer 1870; Phalaena noctua punctata Stoll 1790; Heterephyra rubella Warren 1907.
E. Caribbean records: Nevis; Dominica; Guadeloupe; Grenada.
Grenadines records: Union (Daudin, July & Nov. 1997); Bequia, Canouan, Mayero, Union, Palm (E.U. Exp., No. 69).
Method of identification: my specimens agree with specimens from elsewhere in the West Indies in my collection identified as this species by M. Claude Herbulot, Paris. My specimens also agree with the figure of S. caecaria in Seitz (1925) pl. 10, fig. c2. The series of specimens of this species taken by the Exeter University Expedition was identified by them as Semaeopus vincentii Prout 1938, which is a valid species definitely found in the Grenadines as the Type Localities are St. Vincent and Bequia; however their specimens do not agree with the figure in the original description by Prout in Seitz (1925) pl. 11, fig. b6.
