Distribution: southern USA; Central America; Greater and Lesser Antilles.
Type locality: North America.
Synonyms: Poaphila consequens Walker 1858; Poaphila contacta Walker 1858; Ophiusa difficilis Walker 1858; Ophiusa narrans Walker 1858; Alamis olivacea Walker 1865; Poaphila subordinata Walker 1865; Athyrma tetragona Walker 1865.
E. Caribbean records: Guadeloupe; St. Lucia; Grenada.
Grenadines records: Bequia, Quatre, Mustique, Mayero, Union, Frigate, Petite Martinique (E.U. Exp., No's 60, 158 and 199 (199 in part, with specimens of Coenipeta bibitrix).
Method of identification: by comparison with specimens from elsewhere in the West Indies in my collection identified as this species by Bernard Lalanne-Cassou, Paris. Adult & Genitalia illustrated in colour on website on French Antilles Lepidoptera by Zagatti, Lalanne-Cassou & Le Duchat d'Aubigny.
Notes: this species is sexually dimorphic, as illustrated, and quite variable throughout its range. This species was misidentified by the Exeter University Expedition as 'Acontia tetragona' (subfamily Acontiinae).
