Distribution: tropical America.
Type locality: 'Americae Meridionalis'.
Synonyms: Phalaena commelinae J.E. Smith 1797; Phalaena marmorea Sepp 1840.
E. Caribbean records: Grenada; St. Lucia; Dominica; St. Vincent.
Grenadines records: Bequia, Quatre, Battowia, Mustique, Canouan, Petite Martinique (E.U. Exp., No. 16).
Method of identification: illustrated in black and white by Todd & Poole (1980) fig. 15 (adult) and figs. 35 & 49 (genitalia). Adult & Genitalia illustrated in colour on website on French Antilles Lepidoptera by Zagatti, Lalanne-Cassou & Le Duchat d'Aubigny.
Notes: fresh specimens are easily recognised from the dark longitudinal marks on the thorax. Worn specimens probably need to be dissected to distinguish them from S. androgea with certainty.
