Distribution: western hemisphere.
Type locality: Georgia, USA.
Synonyms: Laphygma macra Guenee 1852; Laphygma inepta Walker 1856; Prodenia plagiata Walker 1856; Prodenia signifera Walker 1856; Prodenia autumnalis Riley 1871.
B>E. Caribbean records: Montserrat; Guadeloupe; Barbados; Grenada.
Grenadines records: Union (Daudin, Nov. 1997); Mustique (E.U. Exp., No 240).
Method of identification: illustrated in black & white by Todd & Poole (1980) figs. 2 & 3 (adults) and figs. 28 & 43 (genitalia). Adult & Genitalia illustrated in colour on website on French Antilles Lepidoptera by Zagatti, Lalanne-Cassou & Le Duchat d'Aubigny.
Notes: this species is sexually dimorphic, as illustrated - the male resembles S. ornithogalli and the female resembles S. exigua Hubner 1796 . The larva is the 'Fall Armyworm'.
