Erinnyis oenotrus




Distribution: southern USA to Argentina; Antilles.
Type locality: Surinam.
Synonyms: Sphinx penaeus Fabricius 1787; Sphinx picta Sepp 1848; Erinnyis melancholica Grote 1865; Anceryx piperis Grote & Robinson 1868; Dilophonota hipothoon Burmeister 1878.

Notes: the male is much darker than the female and similar to crameri except that crameri is larger and the hindwing black terminal markings are separate black triangles in crameri rather than the smooth dark band present in oenotrus.
