Distribution: Mexico to Argentina; Antilles (in four subspecies).
Type locality: (species) Jamaica; (subspecies) Jamaica.
Synonyms: Sphinx licaon Cramer 1776; Philampelus posticatus Grote 1865.

Notes: the typical subspecies satellitia described from Jamaica is larger and paler than the forms found elsewhere in the neotropics.
