Distribution: (species) southern USA to Paraguay; Antilles (subspecies) Jamaica only.
Type locality: 'America'.
Synonyms: Philampelus hornbeckiana Harris 1839; Philampelus linnei Grote & Robinson 1865; Pholus fuscatus Rothschild & Jordan 1906 .

Notes: the subspecies from Jamaica, hesperidum Kirby 1880, is smaller than the subspecies fuscatus from Dominica illustrated here and the forewing marking is smaller and more clearly defined.
