Distribution: (species, as a variety of subspecies) Chile to southern USA; (subspecies) Greater Antilles.
Type locality: (species) 'America'; (subspecies) Cuba.
Synonyms: Sphinx chionanthi J.E. Smith 1797; Protoparce auriflua Gehlen 1930.
Source of record: Schreiber (1978); Gowdey (1926); Carey (1951).
Method of identification: illustrated in colour by d’Abrera (1986) p.29 and by Hodges (1971) plate 1, fig. 5.
Notes: the larva feeds on various Verbenaceae and Boraginaceae.
