Xylophanes chiron




Distribution: Mexico to northern Argentina; Antilles.
Type locality: Jamaica.
Synonyms: Sphinx sagittata Goeze 1780; Sphinx butus Fabricius 1787; Sphinx batus Fabricius 1787; Choerocampa druryi Boisduval 1875.

Method of identification: illustrated in colour by d'Abrera (1986) p. 175.
Notes: two forms of this species are found in Jamaica - one brown and one green, as illustrated . Various subspecific names - such as nechus Cramer 1777 and lucianus Rothschild & Jordan 1906 have been proposed for this specices, but the differences do not appear to be huge.
