Method of identification: illustrated in black and white by Kimball (1965) pl 13, fig. 36.
Notes: this species has been misidentified in the past (including by Gowdey (1926) p. 61) as Helicoverpa armigera Hubner 1809, which is an old world pest species. Its larva is commonly known as the 'Corn Earworm' or 'Tomato Fruitworm' and is a pest on a wide range of plant crops.
