Spodoptera dolichos

Distribution: tropical America.
Type locality: 'Americae Meridionalis'.
Synonyms: Phalaena commelinae J.E. Smith 1797; Phalaena marmorea Sepp 1840.
Source of record: listed by Gowdey (1926) p. 63 (as 'Prodenia dolichos'); M.J.C.B. collection.
Method of identification: illustrated in black and white by Todd & Poole (1980) fig. 15 (adult) and figs. 35 & 49 (genitalia).
Notes: fresh specimens are easily recognised from the dark longitudinal marks on the thorax. Worn specimens probably need to be dissected to distinguish them from S. androgea with certainty.
