MOTHS OF BELIZE
SPECIES LISTS BY FAMILY
17. Dioptidae
| BACK TO LIST OF MOTH FAMILIES |
The Dioptidae are confined to the New World, particularly
the New World Tropics. About 500 species have been described to date.
They are extremely brightly coloured creatures, mostly between about 20
and 30 mm in wingspan and could easily be confused for Arctiids. In fact
they are more closely related to the Notodontids, of which they are
sometimes treated as a subfamily.
I have only taken two species in Belize to date, as listed below,
although according to Pat Haynes there are at least half a dozen more species
present. Please click on any underlined species name to go to a colour
illustration of the adult (and sometimes its genitalia) and brief
information on the species.
