MOTHS OF JAMAICA
SPECIES LISTS BY FAMILY
Noctuidae: Hypeninae
| BACK TO LIST OF MOTH FAMILIES |
SUBFAMILY DESCRIPTION
The HYPENINAE and the similar subfamily the Herminiinae have been characterised
by vein M2 in the hindwing running parallel with vein M3. However, the Hypeninae have
'lashed' eyes, whereas the Herminiinae do not. This subfamily is sometimes called the
'Snouts' due to their very prominent, forward-facing palps. Many species appear identical
and are very difficult to separate without recourse to genitalial dissection. Most
are small in size, dark in coloration and delicate in general appearance.
