The moth fauna of Jamaica is highly 'disharmonic' in the sense that many families found elsewhere in adjacent areas in large numbers are completely missing on this island. Absent families include the Zygaenidae; the Megalopygidae; the Lasiocampidae; the Mimallonidae and the Lymantriidae - most or all of which are found on the adjacent islands of Cuba, Hispaniola and/or Puerto Rico, or on the mainland. I have included here only larger moths, easily visible to the naked eye - this includes the families conventionally regarded as 'Macrolepidoptera' plus, of the 'Microlepidoptera', the Cossidae, the Psychidae, the Limacodidae, the Dalceridae, the Hyblaeidae and the Pyralidae - many of which are in fact quite large and obvious.
