SPECIES LISTS BY FAMILY
13. Hedylidae
| BACK TO LIST OF MOTH FAMILIES |
The Hedylidae are a family of about 40 species of moths of only
one genus (
Macrosoma) confined to the New World tropics. Until Scoble (1986)
demonstrated their affinities with the butterflies this family was regarded
as part of the Geometridae. All the known species are catalogued and
illustrated by Scoble (1990).
According to Scoble (1990) the following five species - in addition
to the three I catalogue here - have
ranges which include Mexico, Guatemala and/or Honduras and may
also be present in Belize:
M. conifera Warren;
M. satellitiata Guenee;
M. stabilinota Prout;
M. lucivittata Walker;
M. bahiata Felder & Rogenhofer.
I have collected three species in Belize so far, as listed below. Please

illustration of the adult
(and sometimes its genitalia) and brief information on
the species.
