MOTHS OF THE GRENADINES
SPECIES LISTS BY FAMILY
Noctuidae: Catocalinae
| BACK TO LIST OF MOTH FAMILIES |
SUBFAMILY DESCRIPTION
The CATOCALINAE are a predominantly tropical subfamily and are often traditionally
taken to include the subfamily Ophiderinae (which I list separately). Together these
two subfamilies account for over half of the species of world Noctuidae. There is no
single satisfactory feature which defines the Catocalinae/Ophiderinae and they are
almost certainly a 'dustbin group' containing many unrelated species. The Catocalinae
are traditionally separated from the Ophiderinae by the possession of spines on the mid-tibiae in
Catocalinae, which are lacking in Ophiderinae. Most Catocalines are large to very
large and
very robust in appearance and flight.
