SPECIES LISTS BY FAMILY

The moth fauna of the West Indies is highly 'disharmonic' in the sense that many families found commonly in adjacent areas are completely missing on these islands. Major moth families completely absent from the Eastern Caribbean include the Zygaenidae; the Megalopygidae; the Lasiocampidae; the Mimallonidae and the Lymantriidae - most or all of which are found on some of the Greater Antilles, or on the mainland. I have included here only larger moths, easily visible to the naked eye - this includes the families conventionally regarded as 'Macrolepidoptera' plus, of the 'Microlepidoptera', the Cossidae, the Psychidae, the Limacodidae, the Hyblaeidae and the Pyralidae - many of which are in fact quite large and obvious.

Click on the family (or subfamily) below which interests you to go to lists of identified or partially-identified species captured to date in that family or subfamily. Individual species names may then be clicked upon to take you to a colour illustration of the adult (and sometimes its genitalia) and brief information on each species. Please note that this site is under construction and will be updated and revised regularly - identifications are of varying degrees of certainty, as indicated. Feedback is welcome at the e-mail address on the main page and will be fully acknowledged.
