Pyralidae: Pyraustinae

SUBFAMILY DESCRIPTION
The subfamily PYRAUSTINAE are predominantly tropical and form a major part of any light
trap catch in the Caribbean and elsewhere in the neotropics. Many are highly colourful although
there is a wide range of appearance, habits and habitats in this huge subfamily. Heppner
(1995) lists just short of 1,800 named species in this subfamily from the Neotropics.
GRENADINES SPECIES
Although 22 apparent morphospecies of this subfamily are present in the collection of the
Exeter University Grenadines Expedition, the majority of these are too badly damaged to
identify with certainty. I therefore catalogue only 13 species of this subfamily from
the Grenadines at present. Click on any underlined
species name to go to a colour
illustration of the adult and brief information on
the species.
