SUBFAMILY DESCRIPTION
The subfamily Arctiinae are the classic 'Tiger Moths' with a generally robust appearance and equally broad hind- and fore-wings. Most adults are medium-sized, 40m mm in wingspan or more, and extremely brightly coloured. The larvae are usually colourful and extremely hairy, with tufts of hair originating from small fleshy projections called tubercles. Larval foodplants include a wide range of herbs and small shrubs. The New World Arctiinae are a colourful group and are hence popular with collectors and relatively well documented. Watson & Goodger's work (1986) catalogues all of the known species of Arctiinae and Pericopinae from the Neotropics, and illustrations of large numbers of species may be found in Hampson (1900, 1901, 1920), Seitz (1925) and the two volumes of Biologia Centrali-Americana by Druce (1884, 1897). Recent revisional papers exist on several neotropical Arctiine groups authored by Travassos (various dates, see publications), de Toulgoët (various dates, see publications)) and Watson (various dates, see publications). I am grateful to Michel Laguerre in Bordeaux - who has collected far more extensively in Nicaragua than I - for his comments on many of my specimens (the many remaining errors are mine and not his!)
